One Health
Our shared Covid-19 experience has taught us that the outbreak of a disease in almost any species or anywhere in the world can have a global impact within a very short space of time for humankind and therefore all efforts to control infectious diseases should be pursued with collective urgency. Sustainability of livestock production systems also require innovative new solutions to promote animal health.
It is in that context that I am delighted to support the European Veterinary Immunology Workshop to be held in Dublin, Ireland in 2024. As identified in the UCD strategy, Rising to the Future, we are facing an age of unprecedented opportunity and challenge, including issues regarding zoonoses, antimicrobial stewardship and environmental protection. The veterinary and animal science community are a therefore critical cog in the One Health response to these issues and training the next generation of graduates in these areas are core principles underpinning the UCD themes of Creating a Sustainable Global Society and Building a Healthy World.
As Ireland’s Global University, UCD will rise to these global challenges by supporting partnership, innovation and cooperation in One Health through academic excellence, collaborative research, education and outreach.
I very much look forward to welcoming EVIW delegates to Dublin in 2024,
Is mise le meas,

Immunology is a fundamental field in veterinary medicine, encompassing disease prevention through vaccination, improved diagnoses and treatment options, and also in terms of research to tackle emerging disease threats. Immunology not only enhances the health and well-being of animals but also has broader implications for human health, food safety, and wildlife conservation.
I have had a long-standing professional research interest in inflammatory diseases and anti-inflammatory treatments for diseases in companion animals, and now as Dean of Veterinary Medicine, UCD, I fully support and look forward to EVIW 2024.
